He has a background in law and disability theory and experience of serving on the Special Educational Needs and Disability Tribunal, has been a lifelong campaigner for the rights of blind and disabled people. He is vice-president of the RNIB, president of the UK Association for Accessible Formats, president of Visionary (umbrella organisation of local associations for visually impaired people), vice-chair of the Transformation Council, Royal National College for the Blind, and an ambassador for Disability Rights UK.
