On 23 May, the Lord Chief Justice, Lord Thomas, announced the appointment of 21 new deputy High Court judges. Among them, seven were women, five were solicitors and some were the first in their family to have attended university. The recruitment exercise was one of the first open to practitioners without previous judicial experience, and the appointments coincided with the launch of a support programme for people from less well-represented groups wanting to be High Court judges.
