As Legal Action went to press, we received the sad news about the passing of the former Court of Appeal judge Sir Henry Brooke.
Prior to his appointment to the Court of Appeal, Sir Henry had chaired the Law Commission. After retiring as a judge in 2006, he became involved in the governance of a number of legal charities, as well as campaigning around access to justice issues. Over the last two years, he was vice-chair of the Bach Commission, playing a key role in compiling the final report.
Paying tribute to Sir Henry, LAG’s chair, Laura Janes, said he ‘brought humanity and wisdom to everything he did, from his law-making to his blog and Twitter. He was loved. His boundless energy beyond retirement must continue to be an inspiration to those who care about justice’.
Sir Henry died after heart surgery on 30 January 2018, aged 81.
