Community issues
Tackling social exclusion is an important government priority, cutting across the work of many departments. LAG believes that appropriate legal and advice services can help create inclusive communities and build social capital; we are working to foster a wider understanding of this important link.

Public legal education
LAG supported the Department for Constitutional Affairs' decision to fund a Public Legal Education and Support Task Force, announced in December 2005. The task force, of which LAG was a member, was chaired by Professor Hazel Genn of University College, London and met between January 2006 and January 2007. A report, Creating capable citizens: the role of public legal education was published in July 2007 and is available at: http://www.pleas.org.uk/.
Plenet (the Public Legal Education Network) has been established to continue building a body of knowledge of what makes for successful public legal education and to implement the recommendations of the task force: see www.advicenow.org.uk/plenet/.
LAG, the Advice Services Alliance and the Citizenship Foundation previously produced Public legal education: a proposal for development (June 2005), which incorporates a summary of responses to our joint discussion paper, Towards a national strategy for public legal education launched in September 2004.
