Duties and Responsibilities
The Faculty of Laws at UCL has been one of the leading centres of legal education in the world. Recognised as offering an outstanding educational experience to our students, we combine a strong theoretical foundation in the law with practical teaching from world-leading academics and practitioners.
In January 2016, the UCL Centre for Access to Justice (CAJ) launched its own legal advice clinic, the UCL Integrated Legal Advice Clinic (UCL iLAC), working with students to deliver generalist advice across a broad spectrum of social welfare issues as well as specialist casework services in welfare benefits, housing, community care, and education law where possible.
The clinic has been granted a community care law legal aid contract (to start in September 2018) and we now seek an experienced community care lawyer to assist in expanding the work of UCL iLAC and managing the requirements of the legal aid contract during a period of maternity cover.
The lawyer will work with the CAJ team including a Housing Solicitor, Clinic Administrator, Welfare Benefits Advice and Casework Supervisor and Advice Fellow to supervise the students who work in the Clinic.
This post is available from November 2018 for one year unless the post holder returns sooner.
In addition to your application please submit a completed legal aid supervisor form (which you should have if you are already a supervisor or which you should easily be able to complete).
Key Requirements
The qualified solicitor or barrister should meet the Legal Aid Agency Supervisor Standard for community care law and have significant experience of advising in community care matters.
We are seeking a candidate who understands the needs of the vulnerable client group that we work with and can balance their needs with supervising students working on their cases.
Successful applicants will also demonstrate familiarity with and commitment to the provision of pro bono legal assistance to members of the local community and have the ability to supervise and advise students.
