This is a fantastic opportunity to deliver housing law advice and representation within a legal team in a charity renowned for its legal advice, either for an experienced housing law adviser, or someone with little or no housing law experience who can develop under the guidance of a solicitor.
A home is a fundamental human need, as essential as education or healthcare. Yet millions of people across Britain struggle on a daily basis with homelessness, bad housing conditions, soaring rents, discrimination and the threat of eviction. So, we are striving for change – with individuals, in communities, across society – and leading the way to a safe home. We need ambitious, best-in-class individuals who are passionate about our cause to join us at this exciting time. This is your chance to play a part in the fundamental change we are striving to achieve.
About the role
Shelter Legal Services provide advice, advocacy and representation to some of the most vulnerable families. This is an excellent opportunity to broaden your experience, you’ll help our solicitors to maintain an active caseload that enables homeless people and those with housing and related problems to enforce their existing rights. This will include litigation in test and lead cases and taking cases to judicial review. We’ll also rely on you to take instructions from, and give advice to, clients, take statements from witnesses and attend court with counsel when such work is delegated to you by a solicitor. Drafting letters, statements, representations and other documents, liaising with, instructing and negotiating with third parties, including opponents, experts and counsel and carrying out other fee earning tasks as required – all are aspects of this challenging part-time role.
About you
We’re looking for someone with plenty of initiative, intellectual aptitude and ability to reason critically. Committed to achieving results, but at the same time, respectful of others’ opinions, you work well as part of a team, respond quickly and positively to change and are happy to challenge the status quo where appropriate. Good IT skills, including knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel are also required. In return we will give you every opportunity to shine and broaden your interest and experience in law.
Benefits
We offer a wide range of benefits, including 30 days of annual leave, enhanced family friendly policies, pension and interest free travel loans. Our employees also have access to a tenancy deposit loan, cycle to work scheme and an employee assistance programme.
Shelter helps millions of people every year struggling with bad housing or homelessness through our advice, support and legal services. And we campaign to make sure that, one day, no one will have to turn to us for help. We’re here so no one has to fight bad housing or homelessness on their own.
