About the Job

Liberty is a high-profile campaigning organisation that has been fighting for human rights for over eighty years. Liberty works on a diverse array of human rights issues, including migrants’ rights, technology and digital rights, privacy, anti-discrimination, protest, free speech, policing, counter-terrorism, criminalisation of poverty, rule of law and constitutional issues, and access to justice. We are a uniquely multi-disciplinary team, working to achieve change through a powerful combination of lobbying, strategic litigation, public campaigning, journalism and member activism. Liberty has been standing up for people and holding the powerful to account since 1934, and it is needed now more than ever.
Strategic litigation is core to Liberty’s work. Our lawyers bring test cases in the domestic courts and the European Court of Human Rights to advance Liberty’s campaigning objectives. Liberty is looking for two strategic lawyers to join our legal team. We are looking for two people who can:
Run existing and new test cases for Liberty and external clients
Develop strategies for creating change using litigation and other legal tools
Conduct interventions
Give advice on human rights and other issues
Contribute to Liberty’s policy and campaigning work
Act as a Liberty spokesperson within your areas of specialism
If you are a strategic litigator with a strong grounding in human rights law and a desire to make a difference, we want to hear from you.
Liberty is committed to building a truly inclusive team. We welcome applications from marginalised groups, particularly people of colour, trans and non-binary people, older and disabled people. Your potential to learn and grow in the role is important to us, so even if you don’t have all of what we are asking for, we want to hear from you. We also welcome applications from people who are interested in job-sharing or other flexible working arrangements.
Closing Date: 12 noon Wednesday 04 March 2020
Salary: £40,131–£46,253 (Liberty is currently carrying out a pay review for all posts, so the salary for this post may change but it will not be reduced)
