•In England and Wales, regulation of professionals is undertaken by a range of professional bodies, operating under diverse legislation, overseen by the Professional Standards Authority,

This self-regulatory machinery sits alongside the Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups Act 2006, which provides machinery whereby individuals are required to disclose criminal convictions and other relevant information about themselves and may be barred from working with children or adults, by the Disclosure and Barring Service.
