LAG at Labour Access to Justice Commission
Last month, LAG and the Low Commission appeared at the second evidence session of the Labour party’s inquiry into legal aid.
LAG’s director, Steve Hynes, outlined the impact of the LASPO cuts, emphasising that a decline in the number of legal aid cases had begun under the coalition government before the introduction of the cuts, at which point the number of people being assisted with civil cases ‘fell off a cliff’. Lord Low gave evidence on behalf of the Low Commission and stressed the importance of early advice with social welfare law problems.
The commission is chaired by Lord Bach, the former legal aid minister.
