APPGs update
The second meeting of the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Public Legal Education (PLE) on 18 April 2016 addressed the challenges faced by the civil justice system in light of Lord Justice Briggs’s civil courts structure review. Sir Robin Knowles and Professor Richard Susskind led discussions on the future shape of public education and information, including the role of the online court for civil claims and other opportunities for online learning about courts and dispute resolution. Knowles called for all legal professionals to engage in PLE work so that PLE could be delivered ‘at scale’.
Meanwhile, there will be a relaunch of the APPG on Pro Bono this month as an adjunct to the PLE group, to be chaired by Conservative MP, Alex Chalk.
Finally, Shailesh Vara, minister for the courts and legal aid, will speak at the next meeting of the APPG on Legal Aid. The meeting will take place on 17 May 2016 at 3 pm; Keir Starmer QC will be chairing. The group is run by the Legal Aid Practitioners Group. Please email: office@lapg.co.uk if you wish to attend.
