About the role
Private Sector Housing Standards (PSHS) are looking for an individual talented Consumer Protection/Trading Standards Officer to join our dynamic team. PSHSS is very proud of what we have already achieved and is looking to build upon this good work.
The role will be working within PSHS to:
Ensuring residential lettings agents (RLAs) are providing an effective and business-compliant service in Newham to both tenants and landlords.
Support private tenants with RLA issues.
Update Newham’s RLA Rating System.
Promote good practice amongst the RLA industry.
Liaise with national and regional bodies including the GLA on regulating RLAs.
You will be able to develop their skills in a range of areas that support PSHS and the work to protect tenants and landlord interests and improve the quality and safety of private rented sector housing in Newham.

Newham is located only 5 miles (8 km) east of the City of London and north of the River Thames. Our Office is only 13mins from the M11 and 20mins from the M25.
The London Underground and Overground, the Docklands Light Railway (DLR), Buses and National Rail, which includes the new cross-London rail service (Elizabeth Line) that will stop close to our offices, serve public Transport in Newham.
You can either use your own car to get around the borough and claim your mileage through the Council expenses or use public transport. If you wish to use public transport, then an Oyster card will be provided to you for Council use purposes or you can obtain an interest-free season ticket loan from the Council.
About You
You must be DCATS/DTS qualified or equivalent or relevant experience in energy efficiency regulation and/or regulation and business compliance of residential letting agents.
You must have experience and knowledge in enforcing trading standards/consumer protection legislation and practices. You must also have experience in informing the public and businesses about legislation. You will require knowledge of legislation involving energy efficiency (MEES) regulation, residential letting agents and businesses as well evidential and court /tribunal procedures.
You will need good written and verbal communication skills, good IT skills, and experience of working within a successful team.
Occasionally, it may be necessary to work outside normal hours.
