17.11In general, advocacy in a criminal case is funded by a representation order, which will cover all of the hearings from the first appearance in the magistrates’ court up to the final sentencing hearing. A representation order will also generally be required for advocacy in appeals.
17.12The main stage at which advocacy is not covered by a representation order is the investigations stage. At this stage, funding is provided by advocacy assistance. Advocacy assistance is also available to fund representation by the duty solicitor and representation at prison disciplinary and parole board hearings.
